Pullman was given a handwritten scroll as part of the special ceremony at the Town Hall.

Oxford has an astonishingly rich tradition of children's story telling, and Philip Pullman is a worthy successor to Lewis Carroll and C S Lewis.

Seven Stories’ Chief Executive Mary Briggs, 58, from Edmondbyers near Hexham has been rewarded for her contribution to children’s literature by being placed on the 2007 New Year’s honours list. Mary will receive an Order of the British Empire by Royal appointment later this year.  read more...

What do teenagers think about censorship in libraries?

Based on a series of focus groups involving 88 young people, this research suggested the following:

· To help both teenagers and their parents, books for teenagers should include guidance on the cover about the incidence of sex, violence, drugs, swearing etc

STARBUCKS AND NATIONAL LITERACY TRUST LAUNCH FOURTH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BOOKDRIVE

Starbucks and the National Literacy Trust (NLT) have joined forces for the fourth year running to launch the Christmas Bookdrive, an initiative which collects new books through stores to share with local children.  read more...

As part of the initiative, children from different regions across the country are being encouraged to take part in a creative writing competition, on the theme ‘my local community and what it means to me’. The winning child from each region will be given a book token and a selection of books from the Bookdrive for their school.

Stephen Davies has won the Glen Dimplex Children's Book Award

Stephen Davies has won the Glen Dimplex Children's Book Award for his first children's book, Sophie and the Albino Camel, published by Andersen Press  read more...

Davies triumphed over a shortlist to win EUR 5,000 in the children's book category of the The Glen Dimplex New Writers Awards. Accepting the award via video link from Cambodia, Stephen Davies thanked his neighbours and friends back home in Burkina Faso for their inspiration for his series of books about Sophie and her adventures in Africa. The second book in the series, Sophie and the Locust Curse will be published in March 2007.
