Spiky the Hedgehog
Christina Gascoigne
This story reminded me of one of my childhood favourites, Alison Uttley's Fuzzypeg Goes to School, though I found it less enticing. Somehow the combination of fantasy and realism didn't convince me. The hedgehog, Spiky, talks and thinks like a little boy but behaves like a hedgehog and I found this an uneasy combination. However, it's a strong story, nicely illustrated and well-produced, and I think children would enjoy the way Spiky finally gets his wish to go to school with his older brother and sister to help in the nature hunt.
