Jelly Pie

Brian Patten and Roger McGough
35 mins, AUDIO BOOK, one cassette
8-10 Junior/Middle

This is how poetry should be introduced to children - with lively music, jokes and vivacious presenters. The funny, rythmical poems, like the 'stuff left undigested' in Cousin Lesley's stomach or the 'truly awful' sister who shot the hamster, have immediate and irresistible appeal. But there's depth, too, with the serious undercurrent of the little boy guiltily tidying his room, vainly hoping for the return of his Dad who's walked out. McCough and Patten's chat and accents increase the accessibility and friendliness.
