Fly, Chick, Fly!
Tony Ross
In tender mode, the remarkable duo of Willis and Ross has produced a beautifully crafted picture book about a fearful small owl. There are three little owls in the nest, and the first two fly after flapping, flipping and flopping, but the last little owl refuses. ‘…the crow might get me…the rain might wet me…a train might hit me’. Her parents insist, and she finally flaps and flips and flops and flies. We want to cheer! Lots of repetition, beloved of small children, along with the soft-focussed, delicate illustrations, makes this a memorable and highly desirable book.
