This splendid book tells, in a large clear typeface, three stories about Little Chick. In each, Little Chick demonstrates the impatience of youth whilst Old-Auntie, a wise old hen, lends gentle encouragement and advice without ever sounding condescending. The text is simple and spare, the words reading aloud with great satisfaction, both when read by an adult and when attempted by a young reader. Jeram’s illustrations are just magical! Anyone who keeps hens will recognise many fowl characteristics captured in these watercolours. Old-Auntie often fills the whole page while Little Chick is very small and defenceless, despite his strutting. Their caring relationship is beautifully portrayed in every picture. This book will certainly find a permanent place in my travelling book bag!
