The Book of Whispers

Julie O'Callaghan
(Faber & Faber)
48pp, POETRY, 978-0571227686, RRP £5.99, Paperback
14+ Secondary/Adult
Buy "The Book of Whispers" on Amazon

A book of observations and thoughts about teenage life in the form of poems which are whispers. Julie O’Callaghan seems to have tailored the poems for the American market using words like ‘hollered’, ‘cookies’, ‘butt’ and ‘mom’. The poems themselves are more observation than poetry, so although one can imagine a young teenager recognising the situations, the collection feels slight and leaves you feeling empty. HT
