Peter, an old sailor who is also a naturalist and animal lover, teaches the village children to respect the feral nature of animals when a seal pup is washed up on the beach. Generous use of metaphor in the descriptive passages about the Cornish coast contrast with a more straightforward account of how the seal is looked after. The best of the rather stilted illustrations feature the dramatic seascapes and the wild animals in their natural habitat.
